Seminar on Women in Politics Widely Covered in Media

On November 6th 2018 a National Seminar on Women’s Leadership and Political Participation gathered speakers from Thai political parties and European countries to exchange their views and experiences on opportunities and challenges that women in politics face in Thailand and internationally. The goal of the seminar was to identify effective ways to enhance the participation of women in politics. The event was organized as an effort to promote the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially on gender equality and reduced inequalities, as well as the broader agenda of leaving no one behind.

All the panelists agreed on the very simple fact that to have more women in decision-making positions it is essential to have more female candidates in the first place. Not only should women themselves be encouraged, but also the political parties have to take an active role in naming female candidates. To encourage women to run, there is a need for strong education and legislation that supports women who pursue career in politics. There was also a clear consensus among the panelists that women and men both need to work together to achieve these goals.

The event was widely covered in media, both in Thai and in English. Also the Finnish representative, former minister Dr. Arja Alho, was interviewed by local media. Further below there are links to news articles and videos covering the seminar.

The seminar was organized in cooperation with Embassy of Finland in Bangkok, UN Women, EU Delegation to Thailand, King Prajadhipok’s Institute, Ministry of Social Development and Human Security and Ministry of Justice.
