A permanent mission, established in Thailand in 1980, was elevated to serve as an Embassy in 1986. Finpro, the Finnish export and service organisation that promotes Finnish companies' internationalisation has its office in Bangkok. The Thai-Finnish Chamber of Commerce strengthens the commercial networks between the two countries. Finland has also an Honorary Consulate in Phuket.
Thailand has become one of Finnish tourists' most popular destinations in Asia. About 150,000 Finns visit Thailand every year. Finnair flies to Bangkok even 12 times a week during the winter months. Independent travellers and backpackers like to travel in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar.
Approximately 1,000 Finns live in Thailand and a few dozen Finns have settled down in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar each. Notification of personal details to the Embassy is optional, but we recommend that all Finns in the region register at the Embassy. Krungthep's Finns is a society of Finnish people in Bangkok, and there is also a Finnish School (Suomi-koulu) and a library.
